Abstract

Alliumsativum,HibiscussabdariffaandZingiberofficinalearemedicinalplantswithwideuseintraditionalmedicine;however,theincreasinguseofcrudeextractsfortraditionalmedicineapplicationsraisessafetyconcerns.WemadeapreliminarydeterminationofthephytochemicalconstituentsandantimicrobialandsafetyprofilesofaqueousextractsofA.sativum,H.sabdariffaandZ.officinale.TheextractswereadministeredorallytoWistarratsfor30days:acontrolgroupreceiveddistilledwater,threegroupsreceivedthethreeextract,andafifthgroupreceivedacombinationofthethreeextracts.Allthreeextracts,eitherindividuallyorincombination,hadantimicrobialactivity,andallextractsinfluencedtheactivitiesofmarkerenzymes.Theevidencelendscredencetouseoftheseplantsintraditionalmedicinebutalsosuggeststheprobabletoxicpotentialofcrudeplantextracts.©2014TaibahUniversity.ProductionandhostingbyElsevierB.V.Allrightsreserved.
