Abstract

This study investigates income inequality and poverty among farming households. It relies on primary data collected from 150 rural farming households in southwest, Nigeria during the rainy and dry seasons. This was done to allow for seasonal variations in farmers’ income and consumption. Data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics, FGT poverty measures, Gini coefficients and Tobit regression. The study finds that farmers’ income level was higher during the rainy than dry season, while income inequality was higher during dry season compares with rainy season. Poverty incidence was higher during the dry season than rainy season. Furthermore, farm size, years of education and access to loan facilities negatively influence poverty, while, household size positively affect poverty during the two seasons. This study recommends improvement in the level of educational attainment, access to loan facilities and awareness on benefits of small family size.
