Abstract

RFID technology epitomizes the idea of smart library technology blazing the trail in the business of information service. The 21st century library user is technology-inclined and the duty of librarians is to meet the user at the point of their and surpass their expectations. Library users appreciate smart technology such as RFID and this will boost patronage and dependence on library for information seeking. Advertisement of library is better done by effectiveness and efficiency of library. While developed countries have met this condition and are thinking about other emerging technologies, the same may not be said of developing countries. This paper therefore reviews some cogent issues relating to deployment of RFID technologies in developing countries. Overview and benefits of RFID technology are presented; impediments and approaches to deploying RFID technology are also stated. It is concluded that the onus lies on librarians to be at the vanguard of campaigning for deployment of RFID technology owing to the benefits accruable from it. It is recommended that strategic approach on deployment, exposure of librarians and awareness on RFID should be given priority by library managers.
