Abstract

LowcostadsorbentspreparedfromtheepicarpofRaphiahookerifruitwereusedfortheremovalofcopper(II)ionfromaqueoussolution.TheeffectsofoperationalparameterssuchaspH,concentrationandcontacttime,dosageaswellasinterferenceofotherionswerestudied.OptimumpHforrawandmodifiedbiomasswere5.0and5.5withpercentageremovalof75.08%and95.62%respectively.ConcentrationofcompetingionsgreatlyreducedCu2+removalwithbothadsorbentswhileagitationspeedhadnegligibleeffectonCu2+uptake. Adsorbentssurfaceswereactivatedas temperatureincreasedthusenhancingadsorbentadsorptioncapacityathightemperature.Adsorptionkineticdatafittedbestintothepseudosecondordermodelwhilethe thermodynamics studies confirmed adsorption spontaneity and feasibility. The Freundlich adsorptionisothermbestdescribedtheadsorptionprocessandtheLangmuirmaximummonolayeradsorptioncapacityfor the raw (RHE) and acid treated (ARHE) biomass were 81.97 and 103.09mg/g respectively.ChemisorptionpredominatetheCu2+-ARHEsystemhencedesorptionefficiencywasobtainedtobe72.65%with CH3COOH as eluen
