Abstract

Thestudydeterminedsomephysicalandmechanicalpropertiesofparticleboardsproducedfromwoodchipwastesandmodifiedcassavastarch(MCS).Thenativecassavastarchwasmodifiedwith25%glutardialdehydesolution.Density,waterabsorption(WA),thicknessswelling(TS),modulusofelasticity(MOE)andmodulusofrupture(MOR)wereevaluatedbasedonJapaneseIndustrialStandard(JIS).Scanningelectronmicroscope(SEM)Fourier-transforminfraredspectroscopy(FTIR)wereutilisedtoconductthemicrostruc-turalandelementalanalysesoftheparticleboards.Densityrangedfrom0.21to0.54g/cm3,WArangedfrom32.7to168.9%after2and24himmersionwhileTSrangedfrom1.8to67.9%after2and24himmersion.Peakvaluesat3232.0N/mm2and35.7N/mm2forMOEandMORwererecordedfortheMCSbondedboards.SEMshowedwell-dispersedMCSgranulesonthesurfaceoftheparticleboardswhileFTIRindicatedtheoccurrenceofaldehydeandesterformsattributedtoMCSbinder.Themodifiedcassavastarchbondedboardsshowedgoodprospectsforutilizationinnon-loadapplicationshavingdisplayedabetterperformancethantheunmodifiedparticleboards.
