The work amplified the centrality of emotional intelligence to leadership efficiency and staff productivity, looking beyond the cognitive skills to soft skills in the work environment. The peculiarity of academic librarians, the concept of emotion and emotional intelligence, leadership factor in academic libraries and the relevance of leaders’ emotional intelligence in determining the organisational emotional culture which affect staff productivity were discussed. The paper established that academic library leaders need to maintain high emotional intelligence in coordinating academic librarians who combine academic and administrative activities together. Much responsibility has been placed on library leaders to constantly seek and acquire soft skills to sharpen their emotional intelligence as cognitive skills alone cannot be relied upon in coordinating staff who are of divergent characteristics.
